TIP: Jury Duty Scam

Recently throughout New Jersey, there have been a variety of scam calls claiming failure to show up for Jury Duty. After deceiving the victim, the scammers demand money in exchange for their failure to show up insisting they are with the FBI.

The scammers will call and insist that the victim failed to show up for Jury Duty at the local or federal level and that there will be a warrant out for their arrest. The scammers will then demand them to pay a “fine” using gift, debit or credit cards.

To avoid becoming a victim:

  • Never give money or credit card information to someone unless you know them personally.
  • Avoid giving out financial information over the internet or telephone unless it is a reliable person or reputable source.
  • Trust your instincts. If someone tries pressuring you into giving out information, and it feels uncomfortable, hang up immediately
  • Verify the information with the correct authorities or court officials.
