Assembly sets date for annual Stephen Hawking Remembrance Day

TRENTON, N.J. – The Assembly today approved legislation designating March 14 as Stephen Hawking Remembrance Day. The resolution (AJR110) is sponsored by Assemblymen Kevin J. Rooney and Christopher DePhillips.

“Stephen Hawking made countless contributions to our understanding of the universe, gravity, black holes and other phenomena,” said Rooney (R-Bergen). “He overcame physical adversities to become the greatest scientist of our time. Known for his sense of humor and love of life, he brought a sense of fun and adventure to the field of science and became an inspiration to us all.”

“This recognition was earned by Hawking’s profound contributions to science and disability rights, but his most lasting achievement was making science accessible and interesting to the public,” said DePhillips (R-Bergen), a member of the Assembly’s science committee. “He was a scientific rock star to young people who are following his footsteps into the challenging fields of science, technology and engineering.”

March 14 was designated to honor Hawking for several reasons. On that date, Hawking passed away in 2018 and Albert Einstein was born in 1879. March 14 is also National Pi Day, the celebration of the value of the mathematical constant, pi.
