TIP: Door Solicitors

In the technology age it seems that in-person scams have become almost unheard of. But recently, there have been reports of scammers going door-to-door tricking homeowners into inviting unwanted guests into their home. Specifically in Woodland Park, scammers are posing as utility workers claiming to check the water pressure.

Many solicitors are legitimate salespeople, and now with the election may be canvassing voters. But if someone comes to your door asking for entry to your home or asking for you to leave your home unattended, make sure you know your rights:

  • Verify the company. If you have never heard of the company before, check that they actually exist. You can look them up through google, the Better Business Bureau, or by checking their business registration.
  • Ask for identification. Although they may be wearing a uniform, always make sure they can provide formal identification.
  • Ask for a license. Salespeople and contract workers often require a license to conduct their business.
  • Ask for a contract and time to review it. These encounters can often turn into high pressure sales situations. You should never agree to anything until fully reviewing the information and taking the time to consider your options.

Your safety is the most important thing. If you feel you have been contacted by one of these scams, reach out to your local police department or contact my office for assistance in reporting it.
