TIP: Preparing to Garden

Gardening is a great hobby to have, it gets you outside and burns calories. If you are not a gardener yet, think about picking up the hobby. Gardening can reduce your stress levels and can save you money in the grocery store. Growing your own fruits and vegetables can be much healthier.

 

It can be tough work to maintain a fresh garden, so here are some helpful tips while gardening:

  • Think of a good location on your property, somewhere that the sun reaches
  • Think about fencing in your garden, so the deer cannot eat your plants
  • Make sure you have good soil and drainage, which means a lot of compost
  • Try organic with your soil, fertilizing, pest control, and seed selection
  • Trim your plants which allows for increased air circulation and fewer leaves
  • Plant several plants. It is known that plants grown better when they are surrounded by other plants
  • Grow things like garlic, onions, chives and chrysanthemums around the garden to help repel insects
  • Water your garden early in the morning to conserve moisture loss
  • Know your region, different climates and precipitation can impact your gardening
  • If you are a new gardener, start with easier plants
  • Set a schedule of when things will get planted, watered, and taken care of
